1966 Volkswagen 1200 in Gran Turismo 5!!!

It was just announced today that a new patch for the Playstation 3 game Gran Turismo 5 will be released on the 18th of January 2012. This 2.03 update will include a new track, bug fixes and more importantly, new cars. And how is this relevant to this blog I hear you ask? Well, one of the cars being launched is a 1966 Volkswagen 1200!!

Besides the Beetle above, the game also already includes a Karmann-Ghia, early-model Kombi (aka Type 2 and/or Samba) and a Volkswagen Beetle 1100 Standard!

The VW SP2 was a sports car made by VW in Brazil built using a beautiful sports body and using components from other brazilian VWs of the time. 2011 Ballarat Swap Meet update...

This year's swap meet was another good one, just as big as the previous few years but not as many old Volkswagen parts, nothing really worth buying.

The only decent parts I found were a few average condition body parts, but there were some nice Kombis and Beetles for sale!

This past weekend me and the family attended the 2011 Picnic At Hanging Rock event. This is a huge event held at the Hanging Rock area near Woodend in Victoria, Australia. It's a huge event with more than 1000 cars on display, plus food, drinks and lots of fun things for kids too, like face-painting and even a petting zoo!

VW Gol from Brazil...

Here is an interesting car for those that live outside of Brazil. Back in the late 70's and early 80's, the brazilian division of Volkswagen realized that it would soon start to loose market due to the Beetle's ageing design, so they decided to make a car that would substitute the Beetle but still be cheap and popular.

What they ended up with was the Gol, which is a bit of a mix of a Beetle and a German VW Golf.

As you can see by this fine example, the design was inspired by the Golf...

... and the engine is an air-cooled boxer engine from a Beetle! Noticed though that this example has a custom turbo system (these cars were never turbo'ed from factory) and also has non-factory wheels.

Retro Take for 2012 New VW Beetle Design Study...

There's a lot of speculation going around about whether or not Volkswagen will introduce a second generation of the New Beetle. Either way, independent designers from all four-corners of the world are continuing to offer their take on how a 2012 New Beetle should look like.

This here design study for a New Beetle MkII was penned by our Brazilian friend Eduardo Oliveira, who you may remember from previous concepts like the 2012 Jetta, Hyundai i30 Sedan and Ford Thunderbird CC.

Unlike David Cordoso's futuristic-looking proposal (see here) that we showed you back in 26-June-2010, Oliveira's design for the New/New Beetle is far more retro.

Design Proposal for Next Generation VW Beetle...

Independent designer David Cordoso sent us these designs proposals for a successor to the second generation VW Beetle that will soon cease production.

David says he envisions the New/New Bug as an emissions-free, fully-electric vehicle, and judging by the latest developments at the Volkswagen Group, a gasoline-electric hybrid or even an all-electric version of the next Beetle, could very well be on the table.

And while there's room for some fine tuning in the design details (e.g. head- / tail-light styling), overall, we like David's more masculine and sportier styling approach on the Beetle's replacement.

Here is a very nice example of a Volksrod. The concept of a Volksrod is basically a Beetle with a choped roof, no fenders, hotrod style wheels and lights. It looks quite different and unique!

Report: Next generation Volkswagen Beetle coming next year!!

3rd verse, same as the first. Not entirely, of course, but when the subject is the Volkswagen New Beetle, the looks of the car are largely a foregone conclusion. Just like the current New Beetle evokes the original Type 1 with its roundy-round fat-fenderedness, the next version, expected to go on sale in May 2011, will continue paying homage to the classic form. The outward differences will be a less-arched roofline that's more like the Ragster concept, and reportedly more surface detailing to break up the current car's vast expanses of featureless sheetmetal.

The new roofline and a stretch in wheelbase, plus a bump in width, will allow more logical interior packaging. Underneath all the retro, the next Beetle will again be running hardware shared with the Jetta. The UK's Autocar reports that its sources indicate the Beetle's dynamics will improve, with the ride becoming more supple. The familiar strut front suspension and beam rear axle layout will return, though a multi-link rear suspension will go into top-zoot models for sportier reflexes. Powertrain combinations in North America will likely be only two or three choices, possibly a 2.0T at the top, a TDI for the economy conscious, and the Jetta's 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder standard otherwise. A hybrid powertrain may also be in the works.

While the concept of a "new" Beetle conjures visions of more of the same, Autocar's rendering looks fresh, and even within the constraints of a 70-year-old design brief, there's room for new expression.
